Local Information about Leipzig
Also, hotels are filling up quickly this year, so we suggest you make your hotel reservations as early as possible.
Travel and hotel information and local organization
The meeting will be held at the Mediencampus Villa Ida, Poetenweg 28, 04155 Leipzig GERMANY. The building is located about 1,8 km northeast of the central train station (Hauptbahnhof). The central station is located at the northern edge of the inner city center.
We have reserved a block of rooms at various hotels within the close reach of the venue. Please visit our Hotels and accommodations page to reserve a room or get in contact with SAXONIA Touristik, the local travel agency that handles all accommodations for the conference. Of course, there are plenty of hotels in Leipzig, a few of them cheaper and most of them more expensive. You can find a large selection of hotels on our website as well. It is also possible to book private guest rooms for a decent price.
PLEASE make your hotel reservations as soon as possible!
TRAVEL: BY PLANE:
You can fly directly to Halle/Leipzig Airport, located northeast of Leipzig. There are regularly flights from and to Frankfurt, Berlin or Munich.
There is now a rapid local train link between the airport and the central train station (Hauptbahnhof). It is very inexpensive and takes about 14 minutes. It runs twice an hour.
TRAVEL: BY TRAIN:
If you decide to take the train from Frankfurt, you will probably have to take a train (usually ICE = intercity express) to Leipzig Central Station (count on 4 hours).
Departing from Berlin you will need about 1 Ĺ hours via intercity express.
If you arrive in Leipzig by train or plane, it is probably better to use public transportation during your stay. Leipzig has a magnificent TRAM Infrastructure and many Hotels offer flat rates for your entire stay. Find the entire TRAM Infrastructure here!
Deutsche Bahn AG (German Railroad)
TRAVEL BY CAR:
Cars can be rented at all German airports. In Leipzig, you can rent cars from many companies. SIXT (formerly associated with BUDGET) seems to have some of the lowest rates. You can get a car from them directly at the airport, at the central train station or directly at many Hotels.
If you want to drive by car from Frankfurt, expect anywhere from 4 to 5 hours on the Autobahn, depending on traffic. From Berlin itís about 1 to 2 hours.
Parking in Leipzig is pretty straightforward however parking close to the city center (mostly in parking garages) is somewhat costly (approx. 0.50 to 1.50 Euro/hour). In some Parking Garages you get 24 hours for about 3.00 EURO, for example at the central station.
Virtually the whole East-German Autobahn system has been redone or newly built, so the connections to other big cities are very compelling.
Major credit cards are accepted in most hotels and many stores and restaurants, but do not expect it in small shops, cafes, and restaurants. EC cards (= Eurocheque Cards, part of the Maestro system, NOT Eurocards=Mastercards) are accepted almost anywhere in Germany, but are less common in other European countries virtually unknown (?) outside Europe.
In any case, it is probably a good idea to keep some cash handy!
At the end of June, the weather is usually very friendly and warm however thereís always the chance of some rain. Expect daytime temperatures between 20 and 28 degrees centigrade, and about 15 degrees at night.
