Brief Description:

Collaboration means working together with someone else or others while using collaborative technologies for performing joint or group intellectual efforts.  A collaborative technology in this case is a tool that enables individuals and machines to jointly engage in active production of shared knowledge.  Shared knowledge makes it possible for people and their machines to work from holistic systems engineering and collaborative perspectives.  The use of collaborative tools also infers people, machines, organizations and the like (as complex entities) are all communicating and working to accomplish physical and economic defense efforts and goals.  For instance, people and machines are communicating and working to finance scientific and technological advancement; to educate people to become engineers and scientists and managers (via pedagogy, andragogy, or cognitive apprenticeship); to search for and identify someone, people or something; to target an adversary (in combat); and to develop prospective markets.  For our efforts and goals and aspired perspectives to consistently improve and continue their advancement from one generation to the next and beyond, real and virtual organizations must also create pipelines that continuously have supplies flowing from them consisting of people, ideas, data and information, science and technology, defenses (reactive and proactive), strategies (reactive and proactive), and new machines types.  To improve upon and continue performing physical and economic defense and to improve upon and continue developing collaborative technologies, we might consider- well into the 21st-Century - different (present and future) types of warfare (asymmetric, MOOTW, etc.) in addition to non-traditional scientific and engineering concepts such as the adding of anthropological, sociological, biomimetic disciplines and the like to how we practise our trade.  By doing such, we learn how to better design and integrate mobile devices, networks of different types, and multi-agent systems into our System-of-Systems (SoS).  By doing such, we also learn how to better write artificial intelligence (AI) and operational flight program (OFP) software and how to have our OFP or genetic algorithm or automaton decision-maker anticipate the next action it should take when dealing with imprecise collected and detected data.

This Workshop on Sociology of Science and Knowledge: Collaboration, Decision Support Systems (DSSs), Decision-Making, and Systems Engineering -to be held as part of the 2008 International Symposium on Collaborative Technologies and Systems (CTS'08)- will focus on the sociology, philosophy, social science of machines, devices, people, information science issues related to collaborative systems with emphasis on collaboration, decision support, and systems engineering.  The aim is to have a dedicated workshop that fosters closer interactions among the practitioner, researcher, developer, educator, and user communities, providing an excellent opportunity for them to meet and discuss their ideas.  Put simply, you have to have funding; scientists, engineers, managers, users; signals that are to be amplified, identified, transmitted, and received; technologies, devices, chip sets, and transducers that detect, process, and identify signals; and units of measures and mechanisms for displaying situational awareness related to detected signals.  The workshop addresses specific relationships between collaboration systems, people, and applications.  It intends to present new challenges and solutions related to collaboration systems, people, applications, and requirements and to challenge whether the systems, applications, and requirements are appropriate for the needs.

We invite original contributions from researchers in academia, research institutions and industry on these emerging and important areas of information technology.

We invite papers reporting original and unpublished research work on above and any other related topics from researchers in academia and industry.  Submission should include a cover page with authors' names, affiliations, addresses, fax and phone numbers, and email addresses.  Include also an abstract of no more than 350 words along with a short list of keywords.

Please submit an electronic copy of your full draft manuscript (not exceeding 10 pages in IEEE format, single-spaced, double-column, including figures, tables and references) to and  Electronic submissions will be accepted only in PDF format, sent by email to the organizers.  Instructions for final manuscript format and requirements will be posted on the CTS 2008 web site later.  Submission implies the willingness of at least one of the authors to register and present the paper, if accepted.  All accepted papers are required to be presented and will be included in the conference proceedings.
